Hide files in images

bodieph's picture

This trick is actually being done by a LOT of people for some basic form of security. With this, all people will see will be an image file. They won't know that the image file contains other things (like maybe important text files, videos, music, etc etc).

Personally, I have used this here in Pinoyspy elite to go over the restriction that you can only post images. I hide some small files like tools for spywares in images so I can post it here (see my other blog entries).

Anyway, doing this isn't that hard to do. You just need to know how to use a compression program like winzip or winrar. You also need some basic knowledge of old DOS commands.

The first thing you need to do is create a new compressed archive containing the files you want to hide.

Example you want to hide a file named hidden.txt. Create a new archive containing the file/s and name it whatever you like (let us use new.rar for this example).

After this, open command prompt (cmd.exe or command.com)and navigate to the folder where new.rar is located.

Then, type "copy /b harmless.jpg + new.rar nothing.jpg"
harmless.jpg is the image I want to show, new.rar is the file I want to hide and nothing.jpg is the file that contains both.

Now exit command prompt and then try to double click nothing.jpg, your default picture viewer should launch and you will see the image of harmless.jpg. Exit the program

Now, try to open the same file (nothing.jpg) using winrar. You can do this by running winrar and choosing open archive. You can also hold down the shift key, right click and then choose open with.. select choose program and navigate to winrar (make sure you unmark the check box that say always use the selected program to open this kind of file).

You should now see the contents of new.rar which is hidden.txt, just choose extract to get hidden.txt

aha! Now I can make sense of those images you have been posting. :)

This is a very useful spy technique. Which means, you may now use imagehosting sites to share data files? hmmm. interesting.

yes, you can use those sites to share images :)

in fact, a LOT of people use it to trick others like at work, and unfortunately even terrorists use this trick. there was a case before that terrorists used this technique to pass on messages. They disguised the messages in porn images so no one thought of digging deeper, just thought its just another horny person sharing pics when in fact the pics contained hidden files inside.

hiding date in an image i think is called stenography. been doing for that in my work as a contract "information" officer at Kelloggs, Roots, and Brown (that is if you know what i mean)

some computer malwares also used this exploit in images. they would attach their code in an image file (much like macros in Office documents), and then attach that image file to an e-mail message. the browser gets confused on how to process that image, making it execute the code hidden inside. but i think execution of malicious codes has already been resolved.

nice tip sir bodie..

Kudos to bodieph!  ^o^

The procedure he shared is more straightforward and easier to implement than say, hiding data bits in the least significant bit of each and every pixel of a lossless format image.  ^.^
