Open source is greatest threat to Microsoft

Microsoft is clearly worried about Google as a competitive threat. But the bigger worry continues to be open source, according to Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie.

Ozzie, speaking at Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York on Wednesday, said that while Google is a “tremendously strong competitor…open source was much more potentially disruptive” to Microsoft’s business model.

Microsoft And The $1,632 Copy Of Vista

Microsoft charged Bill $1,632 for a single Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade license. Each time Bill, an IT Manager, tried to enter his payment details through Windows Live Marketplace he was told that Microsoft could not be contacted, and to "please try again later." What Microsoft really meant was, "Ha! Got your money! How 'bout some more?!"

Bill ultimately entered his payment information 7 times. Each attempt cost him $233.15. Now his account is out $1,632, and Microsoft is refusing to help.

Warning! ! ! - NOD32 3.0 Mistakenly Flags Photoshop CS3 As Virus

False positives for NOD32 3.0

Today NOD32 3.0 mistakenly flagged several Adobe applications as
viruses and restricted the access to them. Moreover, it seems like
the anti-virus false alert also damaged the executable files as
numerous users had to reinstall the Adobe software in order to make
it work. According to ESET forum users, Adobe Acrobat 8,
Dreamweaver CS3 as well as Photoshop CS3 were all affected by the
false positives.

Looking for an Anti-virus software

Do you always have yourself asking others what anti-virus software you should use? What people recommend are usually based on their own experiences so they are often biased towards only those that they have used. How about reading what unbiased experts say? Wouldn't that be a better alternative?

Before you choose your anti-virus software, it is always a good idea to ask around and read reviews. But as I said, these can be biased towards a certain product. There are however, a few sites that conduct independent tests which are completely unbiased towards any specific product.

Eset retailates against independent testers

It seems that ESET is not happy with the results it got from malware tests done by http://www.anti-malware-test.com/ that it has launched a propaganda war against the independent testing site.

From the frontpage of the site, the words "Eset vs. Anti-Malware.ru" are clearly visible as the first article you will see. Although I read it a bit late (dated way back april 30 2008), it is still good information. It looks like Eset is playing hardball.
