Pompiangan Na: An Analysis

The band Parokya ni Edgar is a fun band to be with, certainly the most long-lasting, an 80's era dinosaur among today's pogi rock and emo-ridden listeners. But then their songs and creations are still seen as relevant among today's youth. Along with their reputation as a SOLID barkada, their (especially C. Miranda's) prowess in creating lyrics (never mind the tunes) are of the same skill and ante as memorable jingles and anthems.

This article is an attempt to decode what might be inside the mind of Mr. Miranda when they create their songs...

Prepare to have your attention grabbed, then throttled.

Such is the intro by Jordan Mancino (As I Lay Dying) to “Ahh…the Fade Out”. Things settle shortly. Does the guitar suggest a faintly western vibe to you? At any rate, this goes down before the “urgent section”, which is all distortion and bare nerves. Then it’s the fade and all is said and done in a few scant moments.

"Phhhp!" is a collection of songs from Ron Jarzombek, the guitarist for Watchtower in the late 80s and the brilliant mind behind Spastic Ink, an instrumental technical metal project that is arguably the most progressive metal record ever made. "Ink Complete" featured technical instrumental songs, written around a specific theme or music theory idea, that also grooved with feeling and did not bore from lack of vocals - two common problems with most other instrumental guitar music.

Daniele Liverani's new project Cosmics mark their debut with the instrumental / experimental concept album The Cosmic Year. The album, a collection of 10 tracks within a melodic and progressive metal setting are based around the keyboard wizardry of Daniele Liverani (Twinspirits, Genius, Khymera), along with "special guest" drummer Virgil Donati (Steve Vai, Planet X, Ring Of Fire), young guitar hotshot Tommy Ermolli (Twinspirits, Khymera) and respected bassist Rufus Philpot (Planet X) show that progressive music can be both accessible and intelligently written.
